Where can I study for the test?
The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has developed and released test preparation guides for both the Security Guard and Private Investigator tests. Please follow the links below to obtain these study guides in from the Ministry’s website:
Where can I take my Security Guard or Private Investigator Test?
The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has selected Serco Canada as its test delivery vendor. In Ontario, Serco is also under contract with the Ministry of Transportation and operates the Driver Examination Centres that comprise the DriveTest program. 30+ of these Centres will be used for the administration of the Security Guard and Private Investigator tests across Ontario. How do I book a test?
All tests must be booked in advance. You can book a test online (here). If you experience trouble booking online, please contact our Booking Line at 1-866-248-2555 for assistance.
If you do not have a credit card, you may mail in a Booking Request Form. This form must be mailed in with a certified cheque or money order to the address on the form. An agent will call you back upon receipt to arrange a suitable appointment.
Bookings cannot be made at any of the test locations.
What is the cost of taking the test and how do I pay?
The cost to take each test is $60 plus 13% HST for a total of $67.80 until January 25, 2015 and $66.50 plus 13% HST for a total of $75.15 after January 25, 2015.
Bookings made online or via the booking line will require a credit card payment.
You may pay by certified cheque or money order by mailing in a Booking Request Form.
What do I need to bring with me to the test session?
All materials required to take the test will be provided to you. No aids are permitted while taking the test. The guidelines for taking the test are fully explained in our What to do on the day of your test

How long is the test?
The licensing test is a 60 question, multiple choice format written test. You should allow 2 hours for the entire test sitting although the time allotted for completing the test is a maximum of 75 minutes.
What do I do if I have a "Dual" Security Guard and Private Investigator Licence?
The licensing test is a 60 question, multiple choice format written test. The licensing test for Security Guards and Private Investigators is different. An applicant wishing to obtain or renew a ‘dual’ licence will be required to successfully complete both tests. The time allotted for each test is a maximum of 75 minutes. The license test fee is $60.00 plus 13% HST for a total of $67.80 per test until January 25, 2015 and $66.50 plus 13% HST for a total of $75.15 after January 25, 2015. Results of the tests for each candidate will be made available within two business days of completion of the test.
